Glaucoma Diagnosis & Co-management

Glaucoma is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because it usually has no symptoms until permanent vision loss occurs. It’s caused by damage to the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. The most common type of glaucoma is primary open-angle glaucoma, where fluid buildup in the eye increases pressure, leading to nerve damage.

At our eye care centers, we use advanced diagnostic tools like tonometry and visual field testing to detect glaucoma early on before symptoms are noticeable. Using the iCare tonometer, we can measure the pressure within your eye without using eye drops or the uncomfortable air puff test. With this tonometer, a light and small probe comes into contact with the eye very briefly. It’s painless, quick, and accurate.

Treatment for glaucoma

If you’re diagnosed with glaucoma, our eye doctors will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Treatment options may include prescription eye drops to reduce eye pressure, laser therapy to improve fluid drainage in the eye, or even surgery. If surgery is recommended, we will refer you to a surgeon in the area and monitor your recovery during follow-up appointments.

Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring glaucoma progression and adjusting treatment as needed. At our eye clinics, we recommend annual comprehensive eye exams for all patients over 40 years old or those with a family history of glaucoma. Early detection is key in preserving your vision and preventing irreversible damage from this condition.
