Adult Eye Exam

Many people think of eye exams as just a way to update their glasses or contacts prescription, but they are so much more than that. Eye exams can also reveal early signs of eye diseases and other medical conditions you may not be aware of. At Pleasant Optics in Mt. Pleasant, St. Louis Optics in St. Louis, Carson City Optics in Carson City, and Alma Optics and State Street Optics in Alma, Michigan, we provide eye exams for the entire family. With our help, you’ll see your best and maintain healthy eyes for years to come.

What to expect during an eye exam

The tests we perform will vary depending on your age and vision needs, but most eye exams will include the following:

Patient background and history

Your optometrist will ask about any existing medical conditions, family history of eye diseases, medications you are taking, and any previous vision problems.

Tonometry

We use this test to measure the pressure inside your eye or IOP (intraocular pressure). High IOP can be an early indicator of glaucoma, which can cause vision loss and even blindness if left untreated.

Refraction

This test determines your prescription for glasses or contact lenses. We use advanced technology like an autorefractor to quickly and accurately determine prescriptions. No feedback is required from the patient during this process.

Eye focusing and eye teaming tests

We’ll check how well your eyes function individually and as a team.

Visual field testing

This test assesses your peripheral (or side) vision and can help our eye doctor detect conditions like glaucoma.

Visual acuity

This test measures how well you can see at various distances using an eye chart.

Why are eye exams important?

When you schedule an eye exam at any of our locations, our experienced optometrists will not only assess your vision but also check your overall eye health. We may dilate your pupils or use digital retinal imaging or optical coherence tomography to get a closer look at the structures inside your eyes and look for any abnormalities. This allows us to spot early signs of common eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Catching these conditions early is crucial for effective treatment and preserving your vision.

Your eyes are also a window into your body’s overall health! Our eye doctor can look at the blood vessels in your retina and optic nerve and detect signs of underlying health issues, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and even certain cancers.

I enjoy coming to my appointments at Alma Optics . The office and rooms are light and airy not dark and closed in feeling. The staff are a nice group who make you feel comfortable and take time to not only explain everything but also listen. I would recommend them to everyone.

I’ve been going to Pleasant Optics in Mt. Pleasant since we moved into the area, and I won’t go anywhere else for my vision care. Everyone, from the front desk staff, the technicians and physicians are all so friendly. They take their time to explain what they’re doing and why, from beginning to end. The office is bright and comfortable and clean. I’d recommend Pleasant Optics to anyone looking for an eye care provider.
