Diabetic Eye Exam

Diabetes is a serious disease that can affect many parts of your body, including your eyes. Over time, diabetes can damage the blood vessels in your retina, leading to a condition called diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness in American adults and often has no symptoms until the damage to your eyes is severe. Diabetes can also increase your risk of developing cataracts, glaucoma, and other eye conditions earlier in life

To help you protect your eyesight, our eye care professionals offer diabetic eye exams in Mt. Pleasant, St. Louis, Carson City, and Alma, Michigan. Even if you see your health care provider on a regular basis, you still need annual eye exams with an eye doctor who has experience in treating diabetic eye disease. Eye doctors have specialized equipment that allows them to examine your eyes more thoroughly than your regular provider.

Diagnosing diabetic eye disease

We use advanced technology such as the Zeiss Clarus 500 Fundus Camera and the Zeiss OCT 5000 to ensure accurate and comprehensive eye exams for our diabetic patients.

Zeiss Clarus 500 Fundus Camera

This innovative technology captures high-resolution images of the back of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. These images provide valuable information about your overall eye health and can help detect any early signs of diabetic retinopathy or other eye conditions related to diabetes. With this technology, we can monitor changes in your eyes over time and take proactive steps to protect your vision. Not only does the Zeiss Clarus 500 provide incredibly detailed images of your retina, but it also offers a wide-field view that allows us to see more of your eye in a single image. By providing a comprehensive view of your eye health, we can tailor personalized treatment plans that address your specific needs.

Zeiss OCT 5000

We also use the Zeiss OCT (optical coherence tomography) 5000 for diabetic eye exams. This state-of-the-art imaging technology uses light waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of the layers of your retina. The Zeiss OCT 5000 provides our eye doctors with even more information about your eye health, allowing us to detect subtle changes that may not be visible during a regular eye exam.

Treatment for diabetic eye disease

There is currently no cure for diabetic eye disease, but treatment can prevent vision loss and stop disease progression. Our team will work closely with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that fits your vision needs and lifestyle. Our eye doctor may recommend medications or lifestyle changes such as getting enough exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, or eating nutritious foods. In some cases, more advanced treatment options may be necessary such as surgery or laser therapy.

I was seen at the Alma office. She was very thorough and took her time to make sure my new glasses were exactly what I needed.
Highly recommend!
